Honey: TO Bee or not to Bee that is the vegan question...

So... as a vegan we don't use honey or eat honey as it is an animal product. However, I have been thinking long and hard about honey... well actually the local bee farmer. The small bee keeper that is helping to support the bee populations. The small bee farmer that is helping to keep the farms organic and conventional producing. Bees are extremely important to our eco system. Without the bees cross pollenization we would be farm-less.

Now.... Bees die in the process... especially in the large coorporation bee harvesting. But as I interned on an organic farm... many bugs die in organic farming. To keep our potatoes, tomatoes and many others alive we had to squash bugs by hand and there are approved "organic" pesticides. So obviously, that would kill a bug or too. Now we would also purchase "good" bugs to eat the "bad" bugs, Ladybugs to eat the aphids- so one survives and one dies. And conventional farming.... well all bugs die there- the good with the bad- not to mention killing the soil along with it.

So as a vegan who believes in the importance of the bee population how to we support the small local bee keeper or do we..... Tell me what you think: to bee or not to bee.
