The information given here is from Dr. Banu Arun, from the department of breast medical oncology at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center.
Whole soy beans contain estrogen's and alone they are in balance. This is a fact. Whole soy beans are a complete protein containing all nine essential amino acids. Which makes it a perfect substitute for meat. This is a fact.
Here is where the uncertainty lies. One study tells us that once soybeans have been processed the levels of estrogen's become eschewed and isolated out, resulting in isoflavones, which should be a reason for caution to those women that are at a high risk, or who have had hormone-based breast cancer. Studies have been inconclusive and there are others that say that there are some health benefits to eating a whole soy bean product, such as tofu or edamame.
The research goes on and until we know a definitive answer, consume soy moderately through natural resources and avoid soy supplements. Which is advice that should be adhered to all foods.
Enjoy.
